Ethics Notebook

We Are Human Festival is an international film festival in the age of artificial intelligence, rooted in human rights.

Every filmmaker completes an Ethics Notebook, mandatory for every submission.

Four questions. Ten minutes.

This notebook is an integral part of the work. It will be presented alongside the film at the festival and will contribute to public debates and panel discussions.

No answer is eliminatory.

Another way of creating in the age of AI

Artificial intelligence is profoundly transforming artistic practices. It opens new fields of creation, but also raises unprecedented questions about authorship, data origins, bias and representation.

This notebook does not seek to impose rules or rank different uses of AI. It offers a framework for reflection.

→ A space to articulate your artistic and technical choices
→ A space to share your doubts and the tensions you encountered
→ A space to assert a position in the face of the challenges of our time

"AI is not neutral. But refusing to use it doesn't make it more just."

Transparency as artistic gesture

We believe that transparency is an integral part of the creative process.

Naming the tools used, describing the role of the human, sharing the tensions encountered — this is already a form of writing.

The Ethics Notebook extends the work. It reveals its behind-the-scenes, its choices and implications. It becomes an artistic document in its own right, presented alongside the film during screenings and panel discussions.

The 4 questions

Every filmmaker completes this notebook. It is presented with the film. It fuels public debate.

1. Tools used

What artificial intelligence tools did you use to create your film?

Image, video, sound, text, voice… Examples: Runway, Midjourney, ElevenLabs, Suno, Sora…

The main tools are enough, no need to be exhaustive.

2. The role of the human

How would you describe the role of the human in your creative process?

— AI as assistant
— Human / AI dialogue
— AI as raw material, human as editor
— Open experimentation

Or any other approach including beyond these categories.

3. Tensions encountered

Did you encounter ethical questions or tensions during the creation process?

Bias, representation, data origins, environmental impact, authorship…

Or none at all and that is also a valid answer.

4. Relationship to human rights

How does your film connect to the theme of this edition?

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights."

Intention, perspective, commitment.

A space for collective reflection

The Ethics Notebook does not stay with the jury. It becomes a shared resource, accessible to all festival participants.

During screenings — Each notebook is presented with the film. It enriches the exchange between the filmmaker, the audience and the speakers.

Panel discussions — The questions raised in the notebooks fuel public debates throughout the festival.

Publication — The compiled notebooks are intended to be published following the festival, a collective archive of committed AI creation.

International rollout — Paris, New York, São Paulo, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Mumbai, Quito and Geneva, the notebook travels with the film to every partner city.
